The Path to Economic Freedom: Violet’s Story

Violet grew up in severe poverty. Her mother had limited income opportunities and was supporting Violet and her sisters on her own, but she was determined to give her daughters a brighter future. She did whatever it took to keep Violet in school.

One day, Violet was walking home from school when she was abused. She became pregnant—and all of a sudden, the hopeful, hard-fought future she was building changed.

Thankfully, Violet found The Kukhoma Project.

We helped her continue her education while caring for her during her pregnancy. Along with the other girls in the TKP house, Violet practiced literacy, gained vocational skills, and learned about child development.

When it came time to give birth, Violet found herself facing an incredibly dangerous delivery. Every girl we serve at The Kukhoma Project has a high-risk pregnancy because they are so young—but Violet’s situation was uniquely difficult. The umbilical cord was wrapped around her baby’s neck, causing a life-threatening situation for both Violet and her baby. Thanks to the support of both our local and global community, we were able to connect Violent to high-quality care—before, during, and after delivery. Today, she and her baby are both healthy and thriving!

Now, Violet’s mom is participating in the agriculture empowerment program, helping her take her own steps on the path toward economic stability. She is learning growing and crop management principles that will allow her to provide for Violet and her sisters.

TKP gave Violet and her family the education, resources, and support they needed when they needed them most. Now, they are looking ahead with hope again, eager to break the cycle of poverty and build a beautiful future.
